Super Bowl LV is already one for the record books! The big game will take place on February 7, 2021, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, featuring the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. the Kansas City Chiefs. It marks the first time in the National Football League’s (NFL) history that one of the teams has home field advantage for the championship game!
This season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has had its fair share of history moments. In addition to multiple game and player records, they won three back-to-back games on the road to advance to the finals – becoming only one of four teams to ever do so and ending a 13-year postseason dry spell!
It’s been 18 years since the Tampa Bay Buccaneers appeared in a Super Bowl, after winning Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego, California in 2003. And, while this will be quarterback Tom Brady’s 10th Super Bowl, it’s his first in Tampa Bay!
Now, the Buccaneers (and all of Tampa Bay) are preparing for the home team to take the field on February 7th! The Buccaneers’ home stadium, Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, was actually built with the big game in mind. Replacing the old Tampa Stadium, the first game played at Raymond James was on September 20, 1998, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers taking on the Chicago Bears (and winning 27 to 15)!
The stadium, nicknamed “Ray Jay” by Tampa locals, features a 103-foot replica of a pirate ship in its north end zone, designed by a Walt Disney World prop creator. While seating can accommodate up to 75,000 fans, the attendance at this year’s big game will be limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic – making even more history! For this game unlike any other, the NFL has been working closely with public officials and health officials to develop safety protocols to ensure an incredible fan experience while prioritizing safety.
While Super Bowl LV features many firsts, it’s not the first time Tampa Bay has been a host city. With predictably sunny weather and a welcoming community, Tampa Bay is the ideal location for the National Football League’s (NFL) championship game. In fact, this is the fifth Super Bowl to be held in Tampa Bay and the third to be held at Raymond James Stadium!
In addition to the big game on February 7th, there are many other ways that fans can participate in the festivities throughout Tampa Bay. If you’re a local or are planning on visiting, you can check out the planned line up of events surrounding the Super Bowl here.
